The Five Most Common Mistakes Home Based Businesses Make

As a person that has been involved in several home based businesses, I have made mistakes. I have made the mistake of not researching a business opportunity thoroughly before I started. I have made the mistake of getting caught up in the excitement of an opportunity meeting, and joined organizations that were not right for me. However, business is business, and there are common mistakes that home based business owners make that cause discouragement, and ultimately lead to giving up. There are many mistakes a home based business owner can make, but these are the most common.

1. Committing to high overheads based on potential rather than actual business

2. Not offering anything new in the way of a product or service

3. Being Impatient

4. Lack of marketing vigor

5. Lack of market research

Committing To High Overheads Based On Potential Rather Than Actual Business

Computer equipment purchases, business cards, glossy fliers, yellow page ads, part-time staff, letterheads, press advertising—they all add up. Especially for new home base businesses that will take some time to establish. Business must grow organically if a business is to survive. Expenses must work as a proportion of income.

Not Offering Anything New In The Way Of a Product or Service

There must be a very clear reason why a consumer or client would buy your product or service and not someone else’s. Therefore, you must make a distinction between you and your competition. Offer something new and initiative.

Being Impatient

Owners of new home base businesses can get disappointed when customers do not race to their business immediately. The only kinds of business where this instant-success might happen are new retail ventures in incredible locations. However, these kinds of businesses require a lot of start-up capital. Building a business takes time. In fact smart operators start their home business before leaving their job. Be patient and keep learning, modifying and refining your operation.

Lack of Marketing Vigor

You have to work hard to get your message across. Small local newspapers—not the big expensive ones—are marvelously inexpensive and efficient. Classifieds in those same papers can perform as well as the expensive, graphic-intensive display ads. You must work and guerrilla market tirelessly in the early phases of your home business life.

Lack of Market Research

Why setup a new business if there are dozen of other similar operations in your area that have been going successfully for years? If you have a homes based business idea of merit, ask your prospects their specific problems, frustrations, fears, and needs and frame all marketing addressing their specific needs in their language and not the language of textbooks. Research cost almost nothing, but your time.

If you are considering a home business or already have a home based business give consideration to theses common mistakes. These mistakes are linked to your financial resources, products, knowing your market and your level of patience. My experience is that these factors can make or break your business.
